MTB Handlebar: Body and Extensions

MTB handlebars, control and stability on every trail

An MTB handlebar lets you control the direction the bike is going and manage your line by correcting deviations caused by rough trails and uneven terrain. They differ from road bike handlebars in their bend. In fact, MTB handlebars typically have a straight bend, which is why they are commonly called flat handlebars. It is essential to choose the right handlebar length. The correct model is selected based on the rider's build and riding style. The rule to follow is this: handlebar length should be matched to the cyclist's shoulder width. The variable that can change the choice is the riding position. For example, a very long handlebar increases stability on faster sections, requiring less effort from the biker when steering is needed. Instead, a shorter handlebar offers a unique feel in sharp direction changes, making the bike significantly more agile. In general, handlebar length ranges from 550 to 810 mm.

Handlebar rise and construction materials

The rise of the handlebar is a key factor to consider when choosing a handlebar. Also known as rise, it defines the vertical distance between the handlebar stem and the ends. It can be ranging from 0 to over 40 mm and has a decisive impact on the riding experience. A completely straight handlebar or one with little rise shifts the center of gravity forward, allowing the cyclist to push better on climbs. Conversely, a high rise creates a more comfortable position, limiting the forward pitching effect and significantly improving descending performance. The construction materials make the difference in terms of weight. Aluminum, carbon fiber and titanium are the three available options. All three materials provide excellent vibration damping, while carbon fiber and titanium are lighter, stronger and more flexible than aluminum. The direct consequence is a higher price.

The right handlebar for every discipline

The final variable in identifying the corretto handlebar model is the discipline you ride. For example, in cross-country, riders prefer short, flat handlebars or those with only a slight rise, such as the Specialized S-Works Carbon Mini Rise. These features prioritize cornering control and climbing efficiency. The approach to downhill is completely different: focused on descending, it benefits from wide MTB handlebars with plenty of rise, such as the Specialized S-Works DH Carbon. In between are the versatile trail, enduro and all-mountain models, among which the excellent Deity Skywire 15 rise stands out.
